Fundamentals of Track & Field
The building blocks of track & field
I use the foundations of athletics to help children develop transferable skills such as:
-
Running – speed, rhythm, balance, and coordination.
-
Jumping – power, agility, and body control.
-
Throwing – coordination, accuracy, and strength.
These fundamentals are more than sports techniques; they are essential movement patterns that prepare young people to thrive in all physical activity, from playground games to competitive sport.
Multi-Sports Skill Development (MSSD)
Multi-sports skill development forms the foundation of physical activity by equipping pupils with the fundamental movement skills such as running, jumping, throwing, catching, balancing, and agility that underpin every sport and physical activity.
In addition, MSSD promotes cognitive development through problem-solving, decision-making, and communication, supporting broader learning goals.
This approach not only enhances physical literacy but also encourages teamwork, resilience, and positive attitudes towards health and wellbeing.

Fitness Assessments
The 6 Pillars of Assessment provide a clear, structured framework for understanding each athlete’s physical development, such as:
-
Endurance
-
Speed
-
Power
-
Agility
-
Strength
-
Movement Skills
By looking at endurance, speed, power, agility, strength, and movement quality, I can build a full picture of how a young person moves and performs.
These assessments help me recognise strengths, identify areas for development, and shape personalised training sessions that build confidence, support progression, and foster a lifelong love of sport.
